Lake Iskanderkul is one of the most beautiful places in all of Tajikistan and only on a stone's throw from the capital Dushanbe. Named after Alexander (Iskander) the Great – who ventured here during his expeditions in Central Asia – Iskanderkul is an amazing destination for a short hiking trip. On this trek, we hike all around the lake with two overnight stays on the lakeshore, including one night wild camping. Between the breathtaking views, there is also enough time to relax and even take a swim in the cold water. In addition to Iskanderkul, we also visit the nearby waterfall and Kulimoron (Snake Lake). The trails are mostly flat and easy to walk, making this trek accessible to hikers of almost all fitness levels. Altogether, it is an ideal trip for anyone who has a few spare days in Tajikistan to go on an adventure.
The day-to-day itinerary gives a detailed overview of the hiking and highlights planned for each stage of the trek. The itinerary has been carefully tested and tried. Although it rarely happens, unforeseen circumstances can force us to make (minor) adaptations to the schedule, even during the trek. For example, weather and road conditions may change rapidly while trekking and make certain parts of the route less passable. Flexibility is indispensable when traveling and hiking through the rugged lands of Tajikistan.
In the morning, we go by car from Dushanbe towards Iskanderkul Lake. The drive takes about 2.5 hours winding through picturesque mountain landscapes. In the early afternoon, we start off hiking. The hike starts with a few kilometers uphill to a viewpoint on the east side of Iskanderkul. After enjoying the views, we head down a steep slope to the lake shore. From here onward, the rest of the trek continues only on flat trails. We set up camp on the shore of the lake to spend the night.
Today we continue the hike clockwise all around Iskanderkul. There are almost no elevation differences throughout the day. The views from all angles of the lake are beautiful. There are many good places to go swimming in the cold water of the lake. At the end of the day, we reach the tourist accommodation on the northern lakeshore, where we spend the night.
In the morning, there is the possibility to visit the waterfall close to our accommodation. There is also another smaller lake called Kulimoron (Snake Lake) that can easily be visited. The optional hike to the nearby waterfall and Kulimoron is 4 km long. In the afternoon, we return to Dushanbe by car. The drive takes 2.5 hours again. In Dushanbe, you are dropped off at the location of your wishes.
