Khoja Maston Day Hike
Khatlon Province is one of the least visited regions of Tajikistan, often overshadowed by the country’s higher mountain ranges. The region does not offer extreme elevations, yet it contains a surprising variety of scenic and rewarding day hikes. This series showcases some of the most interesting hikes in southern Tajikistan. The first hike leads to Khoja Maston, a prominent local peak that offers wide views over the Khatlon plains and surrounding hills.

Khoja Maston
Khoja Maston is one of the most prominent peaks in southern Tajikistan, rising to nearly 2.000 meters above sea level. Located close to Qurghonteppa (Bokhtar) in Khatlon Province, the mountain stands out clearly above the surrounding lowlands of the Tajik Depression. The summit offers expansive 360-degree views, stretching far across southern Tajikistan and along the Vakhsh River valley.
Access to Khoja Maston varies greatly depending on the approach. From the north, the mountain top is easily reached: a dirt road allows vehicles to drive to within approximately 2 kilometers of the summit, leaving only a short and straightforward walk to the top.
In this article, we showcase the ascent from the south. Approaching from the south is considerably more demanding with a total distance of 20 kilometers and a total elevation gain of around 1.600 meters. While more strenuous, this ascent passes through a diverse landscape of ridges, valleys and exposed rock layers. You can literally see the geology changing as you move up towards the peak.
Thanks to its modest elevation and easy access, Khoja Maston can be hiked almost year-round, with the exception of periods of deep winter, when snow may make access more difficult.
Trail
The ascent via the southern flank starts near the banks of the Vakhsh River. From Bokhtar, a good road leads via Levakant (Sarband) to the trailhead in about 30 minutes. The starting point is located just before the village of Zagertut. The valleys rising away from the Vakhsh River are popular picnic areas for local residents, and (as also shown on the map) several different valleys can be used for the initial part of the climb.
The first part of the climb leads through impressive red sandstone formations and rocks displaying striking colors as well as clearly visible folds and fracture patterns. After the initial steep ascent, the route runs parallel to the peak, which remains on your right-hand side.

The path then curves to the right and gradually fades as it enters a steep grassy slope. Once this section is climbed, the terrain becomes gentler and hiking is considerably easier. From here, the route is straightforward: simply continue in the direction of the summit. In spring, the slopes are dotted with numerous blossoming trees.

After enjoying the views at the top of the mountain, the descent follows the same route. Near the end, it is possible to choose a different valley for the return towards the Vakhsh River. The hike requires a full day and is physically very demanding, but the effort is rewarded with constantly changing scenery and wide-ranging views.
